I'm not feeling the Barry Odom thing. Sorry, I tried, just don't think so.

Here are some points to discuss..
(And I include counter points why I think Torrian Gray is better with each)

Point 1
Barry's a head coach, Defensive Coordinator is a demotion. He's over qualified.
I don't want such an important role in Virginia tech to be a second choice job for our new Defense.
(Torrian Gray has been Coaching Defenses for 20 years, 9 directly with Bud Foster)
Becoming a Defensive Coordinator would be next logical step for his career.
Bud would know best if he was ready to make the step, since he worked with him for a decade!

Point 2
Barry's too expensive. Why break the VT bank on a guy that's over qualified.
(Torrian currently makes 450,000) Perfect for our budget and allows him nice salary increase)

Point 3
Barry's a short termer. Let's atleast bring someone in that wants to be here?
I don't want the VT defensive coordinator postion to merely be a stepping stone, and be in the same position again in 1-2 years. You think he doesn't want another shot at head coach?
(Torrian is a Hokie, nuff said)

Point 4
Barry would be a waste of Bud's availability to assist. Bud's still going to be around, and who better to assist the new-comer than one of college footballs best defensive X and O guys. Bringing in a senior head coach like Odom, I doubt Odom is the type to want or accept assistance from anyone for a position like defensive Coordinator.
(Torrian worked with Bud for 9 years, no one knows if he's ready better than Bud Foster.
Torrian and Bud could work together over the next several years, transferring the knowledge, and helping him get comfortable with the position.) It's a good fit.

Point 5
Barry is not familiar with the area, will bring recruits from outside, but starting from scratch in a part of the country he has never worked.
(Torrian coached the area for a decade and did I mention he's a Hokie?)
He'll bring SEC talent (just like Odom might) and knows Florida and VT recruiting landscape like the back of his hand.

Point 6
Barry has No Previous connection to VT, no reason for sticking around long.
Just a paycheck and a dot on his resume.
(Ummm not an issue with the guys that made VT (DBU)

I'm sorry, it's not close.. Torrian is the right guy be be the next Defensive Coordinator.
Saying he's never been a defensive coordinator is a valid point, but in this situation, with his 20 years of coaching experience, and working in various Defensive staffs, both collegiate and pro, and working with Bud for a decade as a coach in his system, and having Bud for several years to assist in the knowledge transfer, honestly, could it get any better?

Truth is, Torrian Gray is the perfect guy.
And the opportunity is the perfect timing for him and VT and Fuente.

Let's go Hokies, Let's continue to be DBU!!!
