Perspective

No one takes losing to the French in football any harder than I do. However, a month ago I took my high school age children to Texas A&M for a football game and a tour around campus. I won’t say their campus is more beautiful or inviting than our Hokie stone laden buildings but our athletic facilities make us look like a large high school compared to what i saw there. Heck, their softball practice field looked like our baseball field and their main softball field was like a miniature major league ball park. Their football stadium was amazing! I’m sure A&M’s athletic department is among the elite as far as funding goes but I left that campus that day feeling even more appreciative of what Frank Beamer was able to do at Virginia Tech (more with less) and it certainly reset my expectations for coach Fuente. I know our facilities have come a long way since we have joined the ACC and we are still playing catch up in many ways. However, we want top 10 results every year with top 40-50 funding. Beamer was a perfect fit for blacksburg and we were lucky he found us. Fuente is a darn good coach and has 3 out of 4 winning seasons including 2 10 win seasons and possibly a 9 win one with a very young team. Look at Beamer’s first 5-6 years and tell me there weren’t some growing pains. Beamer enjoyed many years of a Bud Foster in his prime too...... Fuente’s teams have yet to have a lock down D or a multi year starter at QB. We should let the next 2 years dictate what kind of program we can expect to be under Fuente, not the last 2. If Arkansas has facilities like A&M, don’t be butt hurt if he bolts.
