Happy College Basketball Day!

One of the best times of the year, only behind the first 2 days of March Madness, the Final Four and Thanksgiving

Things to watch tonight:

1) watch movement away from the ball -- how quickly players away from the ball move from one action (a pass) to a second action (a screen/cut/spacing cut)

2) defensive ball pressure -- if Mike Young keeps the defense the same from Wofford, there wont be much ball pressure. But hiring 2 assistants from programs who were defensive-oriented may mean he hands the defense over to them. If that happens, you'll see more ball pressure and more aggression on ball screens.

3) where the points are coming from and when -- if the offense is going as planned, the shots will come around the 10 second mark in the clock and will be off the pass rather than the dribble. That doesnt mean they wont drive to get shots around the rim, but it wont be as prominent as it was under Buzz Williams

As always early in the season, dont overreact one way or the other. There will be teams theyll beat they shouldnt and there will be games they lose to teams they shouldnt. That comes with the territory of being young. Young guys tend to play on the extremes during their first few games. They can be timid and play worse than their skill level suggests, or they will come out gunning (think Isaiah Wilkins). Someone who guns wont necessarily become a great scorer and someone who is timid wont necessarily be a bust.

Take a good hard look at where the team is on Nov 5 and then compare that with March. Then you'll figure out how to project the system going forward.

Happy Hoopin'!
