With the benefit of retrospect, it seems the turning point, on the field,

For the Fuente area was the primetime 2017 game at the U. We were ranked #13 at the time and lost the #10 Canes 28-10 in a game which didn't feel particularly close. The loss knocked us out of the Coastal race. We were outgained 429-299, though we did pick off Rosier three times.

We lost to Georgia Tech in Atlanta the following week, a game where some of Fuente's in-game decisions were questionable, at best. We miraculously held Pitt on the goal line two weeks later. We won an ugly one in Charlottesville before falling to OSU in the bowl game. I don't need to remind anyone how we fared in 2018.

We've gone 10-12 since that game, including two wins over FCS opponents and winning three games (Pitt in 2017, UNC and UVa in 2018) that required good fortune. It's arbitrary to pick the Miami game from two years ago as a starting point for evaluating the current state of the program - aside that we are playing them this weekend and I thought back to the game two years ago. But if the current trend continues, then I would not be surprised if someone were to pinpoint that game as the beginning of the downturn, which none of us recognized at the time.
