Schools make so much money off the labor of student-athletes in sports
that some have equated the current structure to a modern version of "slavery" or "indentured servitude" (their words not mine). Also, a few have referenced that regular students are able to received payment from the school for their labor through work-study programs, so why shouldn't student-athletes receive the same consideration? Whenever someone went down this path, the first counter seems to be that student-athletes receive athletic scholarships from the school and a stipend. A rebuttal to the athletic scholarship is that the "regular students" may be on full or partial academic scholarships. At least they see no difference on whether the scholarship is academic or athletic because both have their own requirements in order to maintain it.
