The new normal and new generation of Hokie Fan

Everyone can feel it, can’t quite put our fingers on it, having trouble expressing it but it’s over. What WAS VT football that gave so many memories (highs/lows) on ESPN the past 20 Years, that product and ethos is gone.

As a ‘98 Grad, this simply is a different product on the field. It’s not what we are used to seeing but I’m starting to share with folks on Saturday’s that don’t expect to see what we used to see in Beamerball, Lunch Pail D, a couple star players here and there - it’s just over.

I’m not into the whole fire Fuente stuff, quality coaches are tough to come by, VT can’t afford the best ones, and there are certainly some terrible ones. I think in the bad mojo in the fan base is that everyone is in denial that what we EXPECT is over, it was a fun chapter, but it’s over.

I can’t figure out what this next chapter will look like but I’m not seeing anything to buy into, a product or style that is entertaining. I recognize the uniforms, but as far as the football goes, it’s something mediocre.

I think once Whit has to deal with declining donations, possibly a new brand will come out of this.

I saw someone post something like, “it doesn’t bother me anymore when VT loses.” People are losing their emotional ties as fans, and that’s the scary bit looking towards the future.

Just as an alumni, I hope new grads and fans can experience a great story to buy into.
