Your long term desire....

to get ahead of the "curb" has a few other curves as well. Football is no doubt facing challenges and may ultimately die or in no way resemble the game we watch today, however, given the massive amounts invested in infrastructure and the sums of money still to be made that window is more likely 20 to 50 years down the road. Any headstart advantage is questionable at best.

More likely than being a headstart it cripples the existing programs and leaves few resources to actually respond when the coming changes make the landscape clearer. That is before the actual reality of a basketball program carrying the department is evaluated in light of the coming changes to direct entry to the NBA and other minor professional leagues here and abroad. You can call my view close minded, however, it is far more realistic than the pie in the sky fairy tale you are trying to peddle.
