Was he hurt in HS?

It used to be kids needed to RS to compete physically at RB but you don’t see that much anymore. RBs have so few carries in their bodies that schools play them right away. Not just the highly ranked kids. I’m thinking of Pitt and BC, two schools who routinely have good backs and it seems fewer have redshirted than you would have seen 15 years ago.
