If it is late in the game, VT has the lead by 8 points or less, and the opposing team has the ball, then it is up to the defense to prevent the opposing offense from scoring and regaining the lead or tying the game.

Likewise..

If it is late in the game, VT is down by 8 points or less, and the offense has the ball, then it is up to the offense to march down the field and score the necessary points to retake the lead or tying the game.

Whatever happened prior to that point in time is meaningless because the only thing that matters is the here and now.
