He was offered... he was not offered

Lots of swirl on the board about whether Stout was offered a scholarship or not offered a scholarship with the assumption seeming to be that either the kid or the coaches are lying.

Let me throw out a couple of hypothetical situations.

1. Kid is offered a scholarship if he lives up to up performance and/or discipline criteria. Kid (and his parents) think he lived up to them. Coaches think he didn't. Kid version of the facts is that he was promised a scholarship and did everything he was supposed to do. Coach version is that he didn't do everything he was supposed to do.
2. Coaches tell kid that he will receive a scholarship at a future date. For example... starting fall semester or maybe spring semester. Kid (and parents) think based upon previous conversations that he should be on scholarship NOW. (Most athletes are at Summer I right now taking classes.)
3. Or a combination of the two above...

In the scenarios above, the kid would probably be telling people "I was promised a scholarship and didn't get one."

And the coaches are either going to say:
1. Nothing
2. "He had the opportunity for a scholarship"
3. "We offered him a (future) scholarship."

Lot's of people seem to be assuming that he's better than Johnson, but based upon what? The one field goal he attempted and missed in a game last year? The three field goals he made in the spring game? We don't see what the coaches do... the dozens / hundreds that he kicks in practice. We also don't know about the non-football stuff.

My assumption is that he's a good kickoff guy and a fairly good backup field goal kicker and punter. That doesn't get you a scholarship at most schools.

Glad that things worked out for him at Penn State.
