Absolutley, old system = just be the best on your 11 game schedule
and have a puncher's chance to beat one top ranked team for all the marbles.
Now, with 12 games, a conference title game + playoff, you have at least 15 games, and no less than 3 top ranked teams to beat back to back. There's absolutely no way a program like VT, in the form we've known it the last 25 years could make that work.
For VT to win a national title now, it has to be head and shoulders better than its ever been before, a truly transformed program. We are light-years away from that with no path to get there. We're just trying to figure out how to stay competitive in the ACC. Recruiting is a monolith.
A more realistic goal now should just be to "make the playoffs", like Michigan State. It would take a better year than '99 just to do that much.
