Depends - the word AAU is now a broad category that encompasses

too much in people's minds. Not all AAU is like that.

But i agree to an extent. Case in point. There is a Chicago exposure tournament on the girls side. 400 college coaches. 400 AAU teams. Well those 400 coaches are largely watching the same 20 teams. The other 380 teams are subsidizing those 20 teams. Waste of time, money, etc. That isn't an "AAU problem". That is a problem of mis-understanding recruiting.

Not all AAU is even about recruiting. There are good AAU programs whose coaches features great development, who win but their players are also highly skilled, have a high IQ, play together, etc... They are AAU. So the idea that AAU is bad is a myth because I see A LOT of AAU teams and programs that do things the right way.

There are AAU programs that are horrible. Poorly organized. Run for the benefit of the people organizing it, hosting tournaments just to make money, everyone thinks they are going to play in the pros, people hotdogging it and have no discipline or sense of team work or IQ. But that does not mean that most of AAU is like that. but AAU is not a catch-all label that should not be used to lambast things.

now the "grassroots" stuff is starting to suck if not already.
