That is almost always true, except for Secretariat in the 1973 Belmont.


He obliterated the world record, along with the course record of course, for 1.5 miles, and the closest horse was 31 lengths behind.

Another I can think of is Usain Bolt. He set more than one 100m race record and he had already begun to back off.
