Most coaches do not want all those bodies on the sideline during a game.

They get in the way. It's pretty congested on the sidelines as it is. I know Beamer said many times that he only wanted those guys on the sideline who he might need to play. If a starter was hurt and not going to play, he was left home on a road trip.

And there was a difference between who was on the sideline at home, and who made the travel squad.
