We were a middle of the pack team for 5 years before Fuente
got here. Beamer's offenses were terrible and squandered his bigboy defenses in 2003-2007. The Big East was mostly Miami, VT (WVU somewhat) and northeastern basketball schools. Clemson and FSU were trainwrecks when we entered the ACC.
Take the Patriots, who are truly great, but they get to coast through the crappiest division in NFL every year. Our 10 win streak was quite a fluke. I doubt we'd have had winning seasons as an SEC member a few of those years.
If you want to grade Fuente, his 2016 results looked like he had a higher ceiling than Beamer. Last year his floor was lower (perhaps). We still went 6-6 regular season with a much more limited team than Beamer had in his last 4 years, so I can't even say the floor is lower.
I love Beamer. He started coaching my third year at VT and I always defended him vigorously in the 1987-1992 period (I REALLY DID!). He left a lot of upside on the table after 2004. I think a lot of fortunate circumstances fell in his favor.
I wish the best to Shane, but I don't think he is the answer or that he distinguished himself as a coach when he was here.
