I'm somewhat of a Greenberg apologist but this line of thinking bugs me a

bit. Buzz isn't here if Greenberg hadn't come before him, IMO. Greenberg showed the country that VT could compete in the ACC and didn't have to be afraid of the blue bloods. Had 2 future NBA players signed on to come to VT before he got the can, responsible for the amazing basketball practice facility and some of the best attendance for basketball in VT history. I know a lot of the fan support and success is owing as much to Tech's arrival in the ACC and the intrigue that those schools brought to the fan base but SG deserves way more credit for his ability to demonstrate that VT could be a successful basketball school.

Buzz has definitely taken what SG accomplished several steps further and started from way lower than where we were when SG left because of the JJ era but I still believe that if SG had never been here, Buzz wouldn't be either. Honestly, I'd really be curious to know if SG's prior success had any barring on Buzz's attraction to VT. Hopefully someone can ask him that question one day.

edited to add: even with all of that said, it was time for SG to go when he did, though it should have been handled much better than it was.
