Huge, huge swath of Hokie nation seems to view giving money to athletics like a reward for good behavior ("I'll give X but only if we first win Y") which is exactly the opposite thing that's needed. In fact there's way more people who talk about holding money back when things are down, which is like the most self-defeating long term move you can make if you want to see a successful athletic program.
