The season tickets are already tiered for seat selection, and most if not all of the good seats are bought through season tickets. I'm ranked in the top 1/3 of the Hokie Club and when it was my turn for seat selection last year (reseating year), the best seats I could get in a center section for my quantity were in row Z. So they are already selling every good seat for *every* game at full face value. That definitely wouldn't happen if they did a la carte -- would definitely be less tickets sold but yes there would be a higher % of sold tickets actually used.
