Dean Smith and Roy Williams are totally different....
....despite Roy being a disciple of Dean Smith's. Michael Jordan has been interviewed and has said openly that Dean Smith was a system coach. He ran his system and the players needed/had to fit into that system. He was a great coach. Jordan didn't average 30 points at UNC because of Dean Smith. Roy Williams who was a Dean Smith disciple and recruited Jordan is different. Jordan has commented that Roy tends to adapt to players individually. He has much more flexibility than Dean even though much of what he does is what he learned under Dean Smith. I do know that both ways can work. I spoke to someone who recently spoke to DeAngelo Hall and DeAngelo talked about how different Fuente was from Beamer. Hall said that if you had a major injury Frank and Cheryl would pick you up at the hospital, take you to their house and help you get better. DeAngelo said that Fuente is nothing like that. Sure he goes to the hospital to see players but they are not going to his house to be nursed back to health. Two different guys with different approaches.
