VDOT promotes traffic circles and roundabouts.


They are really more efficient than traditional, signaled intersections. That being said, they do involve a period of acclimation with local traffic, and they are only as good as the drivers who are using them. We have quite a few in the tri cities area. I've seen some crazy stuff at roundabouts, including cars going straight on through and over the raised apron. Once everyone gets used to them, though, they function quite well IMO.
