The mortality rate for the male collegian's age group is about 1/2000
The odds dictate that once about every 20 years (or less), a college football player will die at any particular school. Focusing on that particular demo might indicate football players have a lower mortality rate, but still, one death on Durkin's watch cannot legally justify termination.
Thus, I am not quick to draw any conclusions here. If it comes to one data point + anonymous sources, I'll wait for the follow-up investigation that hopefully sheds more light. Personally, I hope the situation is as murky as possible for U. Md. and that Durkin has a strong case - let the Terps pay as much as possible for this to go away.
