As it is, the damn ticket scanning devices being used currently are too sensitive to light and other conditions and often require multiple takes at gate slowing the lines. That is also true at the airports, supermarkets and anywhere scanning is used. There is no perfect solution but this seems like a drastic policy if the buyer was not aware when purchasing the tickets so they could opt out
