Notes from O&M Tour Event

Jeff Reynolds spoke to the group on behalf of the men's basketball staff last night. He reported that the balance of the staff was currently undertaking Buzz's second annual thank you tour. I may have the wrong name there but this is when the entire coaching staff visits the homes of the current players. They in effect re-recruit the players and their support families to VT. They discuss how the player is doing, both on the court and off. Just creates good will. My guess is this also may help discourage transfers out but that is my thought not Coach Reynolds.

He was asked about recruiting and possible transfers as that has been discussed some on this site and others. He reported that they had a team meeting just the other day and every player was in attendance. They all are going through the practice drills as allowed by the NCAA. So he is unaware of anyone considering leaving but also acknowledged that is becoming a trend and often the coaches are the last to know. He jokingly asked if anyone in attendance had heard anything that afternoon as he was traveling:)

He spoke of the past season and said they were disappointed to finish the season on a three game losing streak. But proud of the fact they made the NCAA in back to back seasons for the first time since 1986. He felt we would be stronger next season due to having 4 seniors on the team. Normally you don't want that many in any one class and their all leaving the same year. But due to some injuries to Ty Outlaw and Med Hill we have players receiving an extra year.

He is high on the three recruits and mentioned they were still open to adding one more player if they found just the right one. Sounded like he was thinking about a transfer since he noted not desiring more than three in the freshman class. But he didn't get specific. Also no mention of how the scholarship numbers would work if indeed they found a transfer.

In response to questions he felt J Bibbs was their best or mvp player. He noted his being the second best defensive player plus his shooting ability. He reported that JB had a good showing in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament and felt he had a good chance to play professionally after graduating next month. Speaking of graduation rates he reported that every player that stayed their entire 4 years of college under Coach Buzz had graduated. That fact is made very clear to the team:)

Khadim Sy was asked about. He reported that he left last fall looking for a better spot to land then realizing the grass wasn't greener outside Blacksburg. He returned weighing 275 pounds but now is 6'11" and 255 and good shape. He expects him to contribute next year and play fewer minutes than he did as a freshman. He felt he wasn't prepared for what was asked of him, minutes wise, and will be more effective next season.

Devin Wilson was mentioned as being the player who was the smartest one on the team. Interestingly K Blackshear was noted to be the second smartest. He also noted how strong the ACC is and told us to watch the NBA draft closely as we will see how many ACC players will be drafted. He hopes we will get one of those level players soon.

I hope this is of interest to others as it was to me.
