Licensed Bagmen.....

the shoe companies in basketball are just the evolution of the "bagman" concept. It provides another layer of plausible deniability for high profile coaches and schools. The real story, using Bagley as an example, was if he(his family) had taken the Nike money and he ultimately selected an Adidas, UA or other school. The Bagley story also points out how sloppy Louisville and Adidas were in the way they handled their business. Duke has been doing this a long time as have a few other well connected high profile schools and they have developed a model where the school is pretty well insulated from violation accusations. Very difficult to pin anything to schools unless you can connect the actual money to direct school sources(i.e., boosters). Also, in the case of coaches their "share" of the take is easily shielded in the personal service contracts they have with the shoe companies. Again, the sloppiness of the Adidas/Louisville arrangement begs that they get hammered and shows the arrogance of Jurich and Pitino and their single minded focus of "show me the money".
