With Virginia Tech and West Virginia set to play less than two days from now, head coach Justin Fuente announced on Friday that linebacker Anthony Shegog will wear No. 25 vs. the Mountaineers.
Proud to announce @A_BasedGog will be wearing the 2️⃣5️⃣ jersey to kick off our 2017 season!! #BeamerBall pic.twitter.com/wVMTDHVPn3

Virginia Tech started the tradition last season, awarding No. 25 to a special teams player who had earned the honor either in practice or in games. Shegog, a redshirt-senior, is the backup to Tremaine Edmunds and played a significant role last season on defense and on special teams. Shegog is the first player to wear No. 25 twice in his career, as Shegog was awarded the number for Virginia Tech’s win over Miami in 2016.
What’s really awesome is that Frank is here to witness this growing tradition and the impact. Too often these tributes come along after the honoree has passed and they never get to fully appreciate the admiration and respect people have for them. Thank you Frank. Let’s Go Hokies!
Well said. And true. We all love Frank for the clean and successful program he ran. Things slipped at the end but somehow we got a coach that has even a greater upside. One of his best
Attributes is recognizing what was in place before him. America does not yet know how good Fuente really is. One more edge for Hokie Nation!
Great tradition that should remain. #GoHokies # Thisishome
awesome, love to see this tradition continued!
