Virginia Tech and Mike Young received a commitment from Duke guard Jaden Schutt on Saturday.

He’s the fifth transfer portal commitment this offseason for the Hokies, joining Temple guard Hysier Miller, Cal guard Rodney Brown Jr., Charleston forward Ben Burnham and VCU forward Toibu Lawal. Schutt is the eighth overall addition, joining three high school talents in guard Ben Hammond and forwards Ryan Jones Jr. and Tyler Johnson.
The 6-foot-5, 190-pound redshirt sophomore spent two seasons with the Blue Devils. He played in 14 games as a freshman in 2022-23 and averaged 2.1 points while making seven of his 20 3-point attempts. After appearing in an exhibition against UNC Pembroke on November 1, 2023, at the beginning of his sophomore year — where he was 2-of-5 from deep in 12 minutes — he redshirted and underwent surgery on his left knee.
A native of Yorkville, Ill., Schutt was a four-star and top-75 prospect in the class of 2022, per the 247Sports Composite. His offers out of Yorkville Christian High School included Creighton, DePaul, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Louisville, Marquette, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Wisconsin, Xavier and others.
A handful of those schools, along with Butler, Dayton, Georgia, Oregon and Notre Dame, showed interest when he entered the transfer portal on April 15.
The 2022 Gatorade Player of the Year in Illinois as a senior, he averaged 24.6 points and 6.3 rebounds while shooting 52 percent from the field and 39 percent from three. He led the Mustangs to a state title, too.
Duke coach Jon Scheyer called Schutt “a premier shooter” with “championship pedigree” when the guard signed his letter of intent in November 2021. He should fit in nicely in Young’s system in Blacksburg that relies heavily on 3-pointers.
The addition of Schutt gives Virginia Tech 12 scholarship players for the 2024-25 season and leaves one open spot.

This kid will be good for CMY’s system. Based on his highlights, he has good size for a guard and is certainly top level shooter. Is a good enough athlete as well, better than Nickal I believe. Quick release and has a variety of moves to get his shot off. Hard to say how good a defender he is, but doesn’t look like he would be a liability and his size helps. Let’s see.
Good get…we still need a true PG or another 4…CMY has improved the rosters athleticism..We will have to wait and see if that translates into more wins..Hope CMY gets lucky and finds a Mutts type passer for his last roster spot..

Best offseason pick up so far! I will take Schutt over Ivy-Curry and day of the week. I think we need another scoring guard or a stretch 4 if they want to play Burnham at the 3.
