According to USA Today’s head coaching salary database, Duffy made $524,123 in 2023-24 at Marquette, a number that ranked 56th in the country among all public institutions. Her 2024-25 mark at Tech of $800,000 would’ve ranked 25th this season, respectively. For comparison, Kenny Brooks was set to make $975,000 next season, a figure that would’ve made him the 20th highest-paid coach in the country.

Among ACC head coaches at public universities, Duffy’s 2024-25 salary will be in the top half. The list, using numbers from 2023-24 for opposing coaches except Clemson’s Shawn Poppie:

  1. Did Brooks take all of his assistants to Ky ? Are there any left on staff that might stay ?

  2. CMD needs to hire someone on staff who does nothing but monitor and evaluate who is in the portal and knows how to navigate the NIL waters..That hire would alone could be the difference between wining and winning big at Tech..

  3. Is there any info on what her buyout is? Hopefully we can avoid more poaching in the future. I would hate to see VT become a stop along the way rather than a destination.

    1. WE already are a stop along the way. Until we attain SEC-Big10 money, we will remain a stepping stone.

  4. Coach Duffy seems to be a great fit for VT. I’d be remiss if I didn’t cringe a bit when she talked about being “home” at Tech. Brooks’ perfidy has left an indelible scar on my psyche. My newborn cynicism doesn’t know whether she is sincere or just interviewing for her next job (like Brooks was). Havng said that, I am cautiously optimistic that she will produce results for VT women’s basketball, and look forward to her tenure! Thanks for the details, David!!

  5. Great Hire. Thanks for the article. Looking forward to how she fills out her staff and the spots open on the roster. Think there is a great core to add to if we lose no more. Love her inclusion of her Marquette days and her embrace of Hokie Nation including Liz & Kayla. Looking forward to the first transfer she brings in.

  6. I expect Whit is tired and exhausted from what he had to deal with the last two weeks. He has done a heck of a job in recruiting coach Duffy. I was very impressed with her news conference. Muffet McGraw gave her high praise. Great hire.

  7. Whit looks upset and constipated…but then again, that’s how he looks most of the time.

  8. Looks similar to my contract (minus the last three zeroes on each of the $ amounts)…

    1. School does not control NIL amounts. While they would have a hand in suggestions behind the curtain, it would up to the collectives.

  9. Marquette is a private institution. Coach Duffy looks good in Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange..

  10. What’s the difference annual vs supplemental compensation? Do the funds come from a different pool of funds?

  11. Most importantly, what are the terms of a buyout if she decides to leave in the future. Hopefully Whit learned his lesson from the KB fiasco.

    1. Didn’t Kentucky pay us a fee for CKB leaving early? I thought I read that, but I could be wrong.

    2. If she is final 4 successful…..she will leave.

Someone from SEC or B1G or ND will come and get her…. And we will go through this whole thing again.

It’s not about Whit learning a lesson, he simply doesn’t have the resources to keep her from either 2 conferences.

That’s the lesson we have learned through this whole thing.

But the chances of her being that successful are slim.

    3. Buyout would not have made any difference. Kentucky would have paid whatever it was.

      1. so sure, why not make a little cash when the SEC comes a-calling? Make the buyout $2M.

    1. My reaction exactly. So, that would mean something like…

      3 Assistant Coaches
1 Assistant AD of Sports Medicine (including other sports)
      1 Director of Administration
1 Assistant for Administration (and video coordinator)
      1 Assistant Director of S&C
      1 Assistant for Recruiting
      2 Graduate Assistants
