Running back Chance Black announced Friday that he’s entering the transfer portal, the sixth scholarship Virginia Tech player to do so this month.

A 2021 signee out of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Black ran for 141 yards in three years, and was a deep reserve in 2023 who only got six carries behind featured backs Bhayshul Tuten and Malachi Thomas.

Black’s biggest contribution came during his first two seasons as a kick returner, where he had 21 chances and averaged 20.6 yards per return. He’ll have two years of eligibility remaining at his next stop.

His departure leaves the Hokies’ running back room with four scholarship backs at the moment: Tuten, Thomas and freshmen Jeremiah Coney and Tralon Mitchell. The Hokies have Tyler Mason committed in the 2024 recruiting class.

Black is the sixth Hokie to enter the portal, joining Dae’Quan Wright, Bryce Duke, Da’Wain Lofton, Derrick Canteen and Johnny Dickson.

  1. If Tuten goes pro, as I expect, Chance is making a mistake. Hopefully he will happy and successful with his next team. Best wishes.

  2. He was one I figured to go. We will have more as we are still 3 over scholly limit. Even more if we add to recruiting class or transfers in.

  3. Met Chance’s parents at the Campus Emporium the day of his first game as a freshman. Very nice people who were obviously proud of their son and excited for his future. His future is still bright. You got this Chance.

  4. I liked Chance. I hope he does well where ever he ends up. I think this was a good decision for him as I believe at a lower level he will be a welcome addition and a featured back. I never saw that happening here.
