Virginia Tech football’s next game against in-state upstart James Madison will have to wait another year.

The Hokies and Dukes agreed to move their 2025 matchup back a year to 2026, when they’ll play on Sept. 26. In JMU’s place on Sept. 20, 2025, Virginia Tech will now play Wofford, an FCS school.

“We appreciate the James Madison football program’s flexibility in accommodating a new trip to Blacksburg in 2026 and are pleased to welcome Wofford back during the 2025 season,” Tech athletic director Whit Babcock said in a news release. “Keeping both home dates on our schedule was a priority and we are eager to continue providing great Lane Stadium experiences to Hokie Nation during the seasons to come.”

The Hokies have played Wofford once before, beating the Terriers 27-7 in Blacksburg in 2022. Virginia Tech and JMU have played seven times, with the last meeting in Blacksburg in 2010, a stunning 21-16 Duke win. The Hokies are 6-1 in the series.

The move completes the Hokies’ nonconference schedule for the next seven years. Here’s who they play in the next four:

  • 2024: at Vanderbilt (Aug. 31), vs. Marshall (Sept. 7), at Old Dominion (Sept. 14), vs. Rutgers (Sept. 21)
  • 2025: vs. South Carolina in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta (Aug 31 or Sept. 1), vs. Vanderbilt (Sept. 6), vs. Old Dominion (Sept. 13), vs. Wofford (Sept. 20)
  • 2026: vs. VMI (Sept. 5), vs. Old Dominion (Sept. 12), at Maryland (Sept. 19), vs. James Madison (Sept. 26)
  • 2027: at Old Dominion (Sept. 11), vs. Maryland (Sept. 18), at Notre Dame (Nov. 6), vs. Liberty (Nov. 20)

  1. Wofford and similar games are NOT what I consider “providing great game day experiences to Hokie Nation”…. I can’t believe our AD can say that with a straight face. With annual costs for season tickets and the requisite donations required constantly escalating, please at least give us some quality matchups. I can “live” with one Wofford/ODU/JMU/VMI/etc game per year. But that is the maximum. Get Penn State back on the schedule……or something comparable. It makes buying season tickets less and less attractive………just saying IMHO.

  2. Whit clearly likes Wofford’s buy price. It’s rare that we’re going to play FCS teams going forward, I’d love to see a few teams I’ve never seen in Lane. Such as Citadel, Youngstown St, Kennesaw St, etc. But these games are all about which team’s price to make the trek is lowest. Wofford must have a low bar and/or a very good travel plan that minimizes all costs.

  3. Sounds like vt knows its draft schedule with the new members …and adjustimg accordingly

I wonder will fsu and miami will come to blacksburg in the next 4 yrs

  4. Looks like we will be saving on travel expenses for non conference foes the next few years. Let’s chalk them all in the W column!

    1. With respect, you haven’t been watching alot of JMU FOOTBALL the last 4 years have you? They are arguably the Best team in the state of Virginia bar none……and they might have the Best coaching staff too. This sleeping giant is awoke, probably needs to be in the ACC and this can easily be an L for us; JMU will bring their fanbase. They will be coming for us.
