Virginia Tech Women’s Basketball Releases 2023-24 ACC Slate

The reigning ACC champions, Virginia Tech opens its conference slate at home on Sunday, Dec. 31 vs. Pitt. (Jaylynn Nash/ACC)

College basketball season begins in less than six weeks, and the ACC released its women’s basketball schedule at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night on the ACC Network. The reigning ACC tournament champions, Virginia Tech opens its conference slate on Sunday, Dec. 31 vs. Pitt in Cassell Coliseum.

The Hokies finalized their non-conference dates in early September. They’ll face two Final Four teams in the first month of the season — vs. Iowa in Charlotte (Nov. 9), at LSU in ACC/SEC Challenge (Nov. 30) — on the ESPN family of networks, with a trip to the Cayman Islands squeezed in between. They’ve got a road trip to Piscataway, N.J., to face Rutgers in December, too.

Below is Virginia Tech’s complete 2023-24 schedule. Note that not all tip times and TV designations have been announced.

The Schedule Rotation

Unlike the men’s basketball teams and their scheduling matrix, the women’s side uses pods. Virginia Tech is in a five-team pod with Duke, NC State, North Carolina and Virginia. Those teams play each other twice throughout the season and will face the other 10 schools once, either home or away. The location rotates every year. Here’s Tech’s rotation this season, listed in order of when the Hokies play each program:

Home only: Pitt, Miami, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Boston College
Away only: Wake Forest, Florida State, Syracuse, Louisville, Notre Dame
Both home/away: Duke, NC State, North Carolina, Virginia

Quick Thoughts

Jumping into it

Virginia Tech sure gets off to a quick start in January. After opening the ACC campaign vs. Pitt and a quick trip to Wake Forest, the Hokies have four games in a row against teams that made last year’s NCAA tournament: NC State, Miami, at Florida State, at Duke. That’s not an easy stretch by any means, but getting the ‘Canes at home (instead of away) is a plus. The end of the month is a bit easier with Clemson and Georgia Tech at home and a road trip to Syracuse. Those excursions to Tallahassee and Durham will be good benchmarks, though.

Elizabeth Kitley and Virginia Tech don’t have an easy schedule by any means. (Jon Fleming)

February

I’m not sure that the Hokies could’ve received a more difficult draw in February. Out of their eight games in the month, which are an even split of home and away, they play six NCAA tournament teams from last season, including North Carolina twice. Tech opens the month vs. Virginia, who should be much improved, before a swing to The Triangle with clashes at North Carolina and NC State.

The last four games of February might be the most difficult, however: vs. Duke, at Louisville, vs. North Carolina, at Notre Dame. It’s oddly similar to the end of last season that featured two meetings the Wolfpack and one each with the Blue Devils, Tar Heels and Seminoles. The ACC didn’t do Kenny Brooks & Co. any favors there besides giving them an open week between Louisville (Feb. 18) and UNC (Feb. 28).

Network TV loves the Hokies

Entering last season, Virginia Tech had played just one regular season game ever on the ESPN family of networks: Jan. 2006 at Miami on ESPNU. Then the program was featured on ESPN2 three times against Tennessee and NC State (twice). This year, the Hokies will play six games on the main ESPN channels in the regular season, four against ACC foes: at Florida State (ESPN), at North Carolina (ESPN2), at Louisville (ESPN) and at Notre Dame (ESPN). The only downside is that those opportunities all come away from Blacksburg.

Tech drew numbers last season in the NCAA tournament — the Final Four game vs. LSU averaged 3.4M viewers, ESPN’s most-viewed early national semifinal on record, and the Sweet 16 game vs. Ohio State drew 2.23M. The Hokies are becoming more of a national brand now; get used to it.

  1. Wow, playing 2 final 4 teams in the non conference schedule, and even a rematch of what actually turned out to be the championship game vs LSU. Go Hokies!

  2. Can’t wait! There might be some bumps along the road, but this will be an exciting season.

NOW, maybe you can slide their schedule onto the TSL home page after the football season is over.
