On Tuesday, Virginia Tech men’s basketball released its non-conference schedule for 2023-24.

The Hokies open their campaign on Monday, Nov. 6 vs. Coppin State. Out of the 11 games on the slate, four are at neutral sites — one in Charlotte, three in Orlando — and six are at home in Cassell Coliseum. The lone road contest is Tech’s inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge matchup at Auburn on Nov. 29.

Many of the games were reported previously, including the ESPN Events Invitational in Orlando, Fla., from Nov. 23-26. The Hokies drew Boise State in the opening round of that event, which was announced Aug. 8. The news that Tech would face South Carolina in a Veteran’s Day tripleheader in Charlotte’s Spectrum Center was announced in February.

Below is the Hokies’ 2023-24 non-conference schedule. Tip times and TV designations will be released at later dates.

Quick Hitters

  • Once upon a time, Virginia Tech and South Carolina were conference foes, both in the Metro and the SoCon. Friday, Nov. 10 will mark the 32nd all-time meeting, the first since Dec. 1997 in Charlotte.
  • Mike Young will coach against his former program, Wofford, on Nov. 19. He spent 17 years in Spartanburg, S.C. with the Terriers and compiled a 299-244 (.551) record. It’ll be the third clash between the two schools; Young coached Wofford to a 79-77 win in Cassell Coliseum in 2002.
  • Tech opens the ESPN Events Invitational vs. Boise State in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Potential matchups in the second round are Iowa State and VCU. In the third round, the Hokies could see Butler, Florida Atlantic, Penn State or Texas A&M. Six of those seven schools made the NCAA tournament last season, highlighted by FAU’s Final Four trip; Butler was the outlier.
  • Senior guard Hunter Cattoor is from Orlando, so he’ll have the opportunity to play in his backyard. He grew up playing in AAU tournaments at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex.
  • Auburn finished in the top-35 in both KenPom and the NET rankings last season. Bruce Pearl has led the program to four NCAA tournament berths in the last five years, including a run to the Final Four in 2019. The lone miss was due to a self-imposed ban.
  • Dec. 9 will mark the first meeting between the Hokies and Valparaiso. The Beacons have made two trips to the Big Dance in the last decade: 2013 and 2015. And a bonus Tech connection for you: Ben Boggs, a Roanoke native (Hidden Valley) who spent two seasons in Blacksburg from 2009-11, started 20 games and averaged 5.6 points per game on that 2013 squad.
  • Vermont, the reigning America East champs, will make its second trek to the New River Valley in December, the first since 1974. The Catamounts were bounced by No. 2 seed Marquette in the first round of the NCAA tournament in March.

  1. So unless I’m missing it, there’s no Friday night game before a home Saturday football game. Bummer.

  2. Not that there are typically a ton of students at the non-conference home games but due to winter break and the neutral site/road games this year the students will only be around for 2.
