Gerard Johnson
Defensive End, Class of 2024
Frank W. Cox, Virginia Beach, VA
6-4, 235

On Saturday, Virginia Tech received a commitment from Gerard Johnson, a defensive end from Cox High School in Virginia Beach. He’s the 13th commit in the class of 2024 for the Hokies, the second defensive end — joining Deric Dandy — and the third from the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Brent Pry & Co. offered Johnson in March 2022, and he was on-campus on June 23 for his official visit that sealed the deal. He chose Virginia Tech over Virginia. Other Power 5 offers included Boston College, Duke, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and West Virginia.

His recruiting rankings vary — On3 lists him as the No. 1 prospect in Virginia and a top-150 recruit nationally. Per 247Sports, he’s the ninth-best player in the Commonwealth, while Rivals ranks him 22nd. According to the 247Sports Composite and the On3 Industry Ranking, he’s No. 6 in VA.

  1. Good signing. Go Hokies; go Falcons. Things are a little different at Cox from my day. We went 0-9 my senior year, our biggest guy went 205 (or so), and I was an inside linebacker at 5-8 and 160. Of course, that was in 1967.

  2. The worm is beginning to turn,CBP continue to keep our Va talent at home. That’s how Va Tech’s brand was forged and that’s how we will return to an elite program!!

  3. Coach Pry and his staff is hopefully getting these players from Virginia heading to VT again. Fu era ran them off but I love hearing that’s changing. VT was built on these Virginia Players !

  4. Relentless
    Disruptive
In the tradition of great Virginia Tech defensive ends

  5. You just have to take a look at these rankings and then you know what level of confidence you can put in them!

  6. Huge recruiting win! This dude plays like a monster out there at defensive end!

      1. college programs do not primarily offer players just on stars (Mack Brown excepted); and, Noah Jenkins ( 3 star) had a couple of more ‘higher profile’ offers than Gerard. Perhaps he was with a bad high school team. It would be interesting to know why he didn’t get a couple of better college offers. Could also be that players in the Commonwealth outside of the top 4 or 5 are not considered by some college programs as nearly as good as the top 4 or 5.

  7. Welcome to the Hokies Mr Johnson

So excited to watch you grow in an all- American DE

    Awesome

    1. Welcome Gerard. You sir made a tremendous life decision. Stick with it and you will be grateful 5 years from now.

Regarding all the stars and rankings, forget them. They have no bearing on how well this young man will do. These rating groups don’t really know much.

      1. These rating groups don’t really know much.>>>>

They are in the business of selling their information. Period. Plus – they aren’t in the business of researching the impact of the NIL/Transfer portal chicken and egg process.

Finally – they aren’t in the business of researching which of the 400+ offers from schools like Bama, Ohio State, etc are committable.

  8. Welcome Home Mr Johnson!!!!
Great job Brent Pry and company !
    Watched his video- powerful!
