3 years to play 2

Virginia Tech picked up a transfer portal commitment from North Carolina A&T running back Bhayshul Tuten on Friday night. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

Tuten rushed for 1,363 yards on 208 carries (6.6 ypc) while scoring 13 rushing touchdowns in 2022. He also caught 31 passes for 342 yards and another four touchdowns. After rushing for only 20 yards in the season opener against North Carolina Central, he finished the season with 11 consecutive 100-yard rushing games.

Tuten’s best overall game came against Campbell when he ran for 256 yards on 30 carries. In his only game of 2022 against FBS competition, he had 13 carries for 113 yards against Duke. As a freshman in 2021, he also had a good game against the Blue Devils, finishing with seven carries for 54 yards.

A native of Paulsboro, NJ, Tuten did not redshirt, and thus has three years to play two. After entering the transfer portal on December 14, he listed offers from Georgia, Boston College, Missouri, Kansas State, Pitt and Florida on his Twitter page.

  1. Bad lateral speed. Notice how he virtually comes to a standstill when he changes direction. That won’t work in P5 play. I’d be shocked if those offers from Florida or Georgia were committable. I suspect walkon offers.

  2. Advice to this young man:
When you score, don’t pose and don’t drop the ball in the back of the end zone.
Instead, hand the ball to the ref, and go thank your teammates.

  3. So, we got a recruit from a (essentially) Division 2 school and we are supposed to be impressed? I hope he pans out, but I just don’t share in the excitement.

    1. .A. He ran for 113 on Duke last year. That’s not bad and that a LOT BETTER than WE DID!
      B. He looks pretty chiseled and game ready, more so than a lot of the guys in our rotation the past few years
      C. Would I prefer this guy’s resume as a bellweather for success to Fuente’s evaluations? Most defintely.
      D. I’m not sure if the UGA and UF offers were legit, but maybe had the good sense to go with the school with the glaring hole in run production (us).
      E. This doesn’t seem to be the smartest thing to complain about. We get a running back that looks game ready and actually had some decent production and against a team who’s D shut us down last year (Duke)?
      F. Let’s keep taking steps in the right direction. This looks to be one of them.

    2. This is a piece of data I always like to see: who else wanted him?

Georgia, Boston College, Missouri, Kansas State, Pitt and Florida

Some good coaches that feel he has talent.

  4. Looks like good speed, but there are huge holes for him to run through in these limited highlights. Sounds like a good prospect, though. Welcome aboard!

  5. This kid can PLAY. I have seen a lot of highlights in the local sports media after a number of his games, and he has a lot of talent.

Of course I don’t know for sure if his offer list (including Georgia) was all committable offers, but he did have offers from some major programs.

No one knows how this will play out, but he’s going to give some of our other RB’s some big time competition.

  6. HBCU Gameday lists him as an FCS Third Team All American and Walter Payton Award finalist. He committed to BC on 12/24 but we flipped him. Looks like a very good get!

  7. Tech’s RB problem is the same every year, our backs aren’t durable.Thomas stays hurt,King when playing is always dinged up and playing at about 80%.Hopefully Pry has seen something in this guy that he thinks can contribute from day one!We need a durable back,Hopefully he can put on about 10/15 lbs and not lose any speed!Nice pickup!

  8. Let’s hope the offensive line learns how to block better. A 5* running back isn’t going to be great if there aren’t any holes to run through.

  9. I disagree that this is a good pick up. We already have several dudes like this. We need someone who is bigger.

  10. We desperately needed a good running back, and, fingers crossed, we may have just got one.
