The Tech Sideline Scholarship is Now Fully Funded

This past December, we made the final payment into the Tech Sideline Endowed Scholarship for Sports Journalism at Virginia Tech, and we are pleased to report that the scholarship is now fully endowed at over $100,000.

This milestone fulfills our pledge, begun in August of 2018, to donate $100,000 over five years to endow a scholarship in the Virginia Tech School of Communication. The scholarship is called the “Tech Sideline Endowed Scholarship for Sports Journalism,” and its purpose is to provide funding to support students in the School of Communication’s Sports Media and Analytics (SMA) program, the program that Hokies play-by-play announcer Bill Roth helped launch.

Other Virginia Tech alumni and Hokie fans donated additional money along the way, and the overall funding in the scholarship is approximately $106,675.

Each year, earnings from the Tech Sideline Endowed Scholarship will be paid out to students in the SMA program as partial scholarships. The principal endowment will remain untouched, and the scholarship will continue in perpetuity, providing financial ad for generations of SMA students to come.

This has been a rewarding journey, and we encourage anyone (or any group) with the financial resources to consider endowing a scholarship at Virginia Tech. Visit give.vt.edu to learn more.

Tech Sideline Endowed Scholarship Winners

Even prior to the scholarship being fully endowed, it was awarded to SMA students, beginning in 2021. The inaugural 2021 award winner was Tech Sideline intern and podcast host Jake Lyman (SMA ’22) and in 2022, the scholarship was won by Glen “Trey” Rorie (SMA ’22). Congratulations to both, and to future winners, as well.
