Transfer WR, Middle Tennessee

Virginia Tech picked up a wide receiver commit from the transfer portal in the form of Jaylin Lane, who entered the portal from Middle Tennessee just two days ago. He is a native of Clover, SC.

Lane is a pure slot receiver who caught 69 passes for 940 yards and five touchdowns in 2022, averaging 13.6 yards per catch. He had four catches for 130 yards against Miami back in September. In 2021, Lane had 42 receptions for 466 yards and four touchdowns. He caught four passes for 30 yards against the Hokies in Lane Stadium.

Lane can also be used in the running game, with 14 carries for 97 yards and a touchdown during his career. He’s also an option in the return game. Lane has averaged 12 yards on 38 career punt returns, including one touchdown. He’s also averaged 22 yards per kickoff return over the last three seasons.

Lane has two seasons of eligibility remaining. At 5-8, 183, he projects to play in the slot for Virginia Tech, though he was mostly an outside receiver at Middle Tennessee.

Lane is the third wide receiver addition from the transfer portal for the Hokies this offseason, joining Ali Jennings (Old Dominion) and Da’Quan Felton (Norfolk State). That puts Virginia Tech up to 15 scholarship wideouts and 91 total scholarships, 47 on the offensive side of the ball.

  1. Hmmm. If I hadn’t read that he was 5’8”, I would have thought he was more like 5’11” in looking at the highlight video. 5’8” is often noticeably the shortest guy on the field and he doesn’t look like that me at all in the clips.

  2. QB and receiver signings surely are pointing toward an air attack in the future. Jaylin has some hands…and moves!

    1. Air attack? More like having any meaningful passing game…If it turns into a passing “attack” where opponents
defenses have to work hard to defend us to the point that we can be balanced with a running game too….that would be great. Not trying to be negative, but we’re only going to have an “air attack” if we get big(ger) time WR’s, QB’s and anything else we need to “attack” anyone. We don’t scare anyone at this point. Hope it changes SOON.

  3. Like Lane’s quickness, speed, hands, and position versatility as a WR, RB, and kick returner. Lane in Lane sounds like a winning combination. Welcome aboard Jaylin.

    1. not clear that this combo is unacceptable at a position where playmakers are needed. My feeling here is: take people who will start for the team and contribute to a winning program.

Corey Moore, Dwight Freeney and Aaron McDonald “didn’t have the measurables.” All Conference selection Jared Verse for FSU this year is a similar story. Those players are difference makers and Champions.

  4. Excellent portal pickup for the Hokies. Lane was part of the MTSU receiving crew who demolished the Canes in Miami this past season.

  5. Great highlights. Seems to have good speed. His QB, #16, might be a great addition, too.
