Tight End, Class of 2023

Virginia Tech picked up a commitment from Stone Bridge (Ashburn, VA) tight end Ezekiel Wimbush on Monday afternoon. He is the first tight end of the 2023 class and is commitment No. 25 for the Hokies.

Wimbush was committed to Charlotte before picking up a late offer from Virginia Tech. He’s an under-the-radar tight end prospect who mostly played as a wildcat quarterback as a senior in high school. He played WR/TE/H-back part-time in 2022, catching 17 passes for 338 yards (19.9 avg) and three touchdowns. As a runner, he rushed for 840 yards and averaged 8.9 yards per carry while scoring 19 rushing touchdowns, with a long of 80 yards.

As a junior at Stone Bridge, he played in a receiver role, putting up 34 receptions for 811 yards (23.9 avg) and 12 touchdowns, with a long of 85 yards. Whether as a receiver or a running quarterback, he has generated a lot of big plays on the high school level.

Wimbush perhaps hurt his own recruitment a bit by agreeing to play quarterback as a senior, but by doing so he showed his unselfishness, which is one of the reasons the Virginia Tech staff likes him. He also played well against Highland Springs, and rumor has it that he was given a strong recommendation to the VT coaches by Loren Johnson.

With his commitment, the Hokies now have 91 scholarship players for the 2023 season. 47 of those are on the offensive side of the ball and five are in the tight end room.

  1. Excellent play on the onside kick. Watched kicker, didn’t leave early to block. Then made a very athletic move to secure the ball and score.

He does seem ready to play early.

  2. He’s a good athlete and a hard worker. Good signing for VT and a good cultural fit who can fill a lot of needs.

    1. I think that Mickey Thompson is HC at Stone Bridge. I’ve been impressed that he doesn’t seem to “steer” his players to UVA. Maybe having a mixed marriage (his wife is a Hokie) keeps him honest.

      1. Or because it has been ages since he went to uva and several of his players have gone elsewhere… including wake forest

    1. We can only hope ….. we haven’t had a big running back in forever …. broke my heart when they moved Barry Booker to DT ……… hoped he would be that bruising fullback you could count on for first downs, like Donald Irons for WVU

      1. Tech or anyone else hasn’t had a “ fullback” in 20+ years. That position is virtually non existent
in todays game. Would guess they would try to put 25 lbs. on him and play at TE .
