Quarterback, Class of 2023
Springfield Central, Springfield, MA

Virginia Tech picked up a third commitment on Sunday, this time from Springfield Central (MA) quarterback William Watson III. He is commitment No. 22 of the 2023 recruiting class and the second quarterback to make his pledge to the Hokies, joining Dylan Wittke.

Watson was committed to Nebraska since February but became open to Virginia Tech recently, and it helped that the Cornhuskers had a coaching change. At the time of his commitment to Nebraska, he also listed offers from Arizona, Boston College, Kentucky, Michigan, Oregon, Pitt and Tennessee. 247 ranks him the No. 42 quarterback prospect in the country and the No. 9 player in Massachusetts.

Watson is the son of a head coach – his father Bill Watson leads the Springfield Central program. Complete stats for his senior season don’t appear to be available, but he completed 59.7% of his passes for 2,026 yards as a junior in 2021. He also threw 22 touchdown passes to just three interceptions while also carrying the ball 69 times for 590 yards (8.6 ypc) and seven touchdowns.

With the commitment, Virginia Tech currently has five quarterbacks for the 2023 season: Grant Wells, Tahj Bullock, Devin Farrell, Wittke and Watson. It’s also quite possible that the number could grow to six with the coaching staff evaluating potential transfer portal quarterbacks.

  1. I am ‘lost’ on the Hokie Football Count at QB ???

Specifically, what happened to the ‘Drones’ Kid out of Texas at the QB position ???

  2. pretty sure Wittke won’t sign with VT but I’ve definitely been wrong before. Also, there’s no way we are carrying 5 scholarship QBs, let alone 6. I would expect to lose 1-2 … maybe after spring semester $$ is paid

good, tho, to see coaches trying to find the right fit at QB. I still think Wells would do a very good job with an experienced line/wr corps ….
