On Monday afternoon, Virginia Tech basketball forward Justyn Mutts was named ACC Player of the Week. The graduate student from Millville, N.J. posted 43 points, 20 rebounds, six assists, three blocks and three steals in Tech’s wins over Minnesota and North Carolina.

Mutts is averaging 14.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists on the year and has four double-doubles to his name (20 in his career). Against the Tar Heels on Sunday, he scored 21 of his 27 points in the second half, the most in a period in his Tech career.

“Mutts was special,” head coach Mike Young said after the win. “Mutts was the best player on the floor today. I don’t think anyone could argue that.”

The 2022 Skip Prosser Award winner is in his third season in Blacksburg. He’s helped the Hokies start 8-1 for the third time in the last five seasons, and he was an integral part in Tech’s ACC championship in Brooklyn in March. Alongside Keve Aluma, he averaged 10.1 points and 7.3 assists in 2021-22.

He’s shown the ability to take over games this year, too. Mutts is shooting 62% (49-of-79) from the floor, a percentage that currently ranks second all-time in program history behind Russell Davis (65.9%, 1975). He’s also one of three Tech basketball players with a triple-double. Chris Clarke did so in 2016, Mutts joined the club in February vs. Syracuse, and Georgia Amoore recorded the first one on the women’s side vs. Nebraska on Thursday.

  1. Just hope Maddox gets his mojo back…and I know he will.

Congrats to Mr Mutts and to all the Hokies for a couple great wins last week against increasingly tough competition.

  2. Great to see. Between Mutts, Cattoor, Maddox, Pedulla, Et Al – this is a very good and likeable team. Mutts is an all time great Hokie and seems like an outstanding kid as well.
