Virginia Tech Football Injury Notes: Dallan Wright, Malachi Thomas

On Wednesday, Virginia Tech football head coach Brent Pry informed the media that wide receiver Dallan Wright is out for the season. In addition, running back Malachi Thomas is week-to-week.

Wright posted a picture of himself in the hospital on Instagram on Tuesday afternoon. The redshirt sophomore from Saluda, S.C. was “having a really nice camp,” according to Pry, but “is in great spirits.” Pry did not specify the injury, but Wright was not at practice last week.

Thomas, a sophomore from Hartwell, Ga., was not at last Wednesday’s practice due to an “academic commitment,” per a Tech spokesman. On Friday, he was labeled as “unavailable.” After he was not at practice again on Wednesday, Pry said Thomas suffered an injury and is going to be “week-by-week.”

“He’s in meetings, he’s in camp, he’s very involved,” Pry said. “He’s getting treatment and rehab, and I’m excited about the year Malachi could still have.”

His injury comes after running backs coach Stu Holt said he and redshirt senior Jalen Holston were “1a and 1b” (in no order) at Virginia Tech’s media day. Thomas missed some time in April due to an injury and did not appear in Tech’s spring game.

Sam linebacker Keli Lawson was labeled as “unavailable,” while wide receiver Jadan Blue is expected to be back “sooner than later.” The former was not at Wednesday’s practice that the media observed, while Blue was in a blue “non-contact” jersey, just like last Friday. Pry said Blue is on the mend and receiving good treatment.

  1. Yep, we are pretty deep here but MT may be a cut above the rest…hope the best for him!

      1. Our running backs are not mediocre. Give them some credit! They have been working their butts off in practice. It’s time to be positive about our Hokie football team. The energy is there with the players and coaches. The fans are buying tickets at a record pace. This is not the Fuente era. We need to create a different vibe going into the season. Think positive Hokies!

  2. Get MT right before playing him. We shouldn’t need him for ODU. If we do, we have bigger problems.
