  1. I just now listened to the podcast and the financial numbers on spending for football recruiting that Chris put out there. I “get it” that VT has fallen behind on spending on football, and that clearly is a contributing factor is our recruiting success, or lack thereof, BUT I think that greatly over simplifies what is going on here. If we hired a Dabo or a Saban type HC away from Clemson or Bama by INVESTING IN THE RIGHT HEAD COACH, which of course would be a big investment vs. what we pay CJF, then I think you’d see EVERY factor that contributes to our success in football would begin to elevate dramatically. I can almost guarantee anyone that if we did that that we’d find out REALLY QUICKLY that pocketbooks would open up to support the Hokie Club that are not open today. Would it be enough? Who knows? But history indicates that NOT getting top tier coaches does NOT stimulate big bucks from alumni fans, etc in any kind of consistent pattern.

IMHO if CJF was given another million or two RIGHT NOW to spend on football recruiting, we’d still be losing head-to-head recruiting battles with UNC that we didn’t lose under Larry Fedora because MACK BROWN is a BIG TIME football coach and recruiter. And, his staff is mostly filled with experienced coaches and good recruiters. I haven’t done “the math” but if all we did the last 2 recruiting seasons is continue the success in NC that we had before Mack got to UNC we’d be in a hell of a lot better place with football recruiting without having to spend millions more.

Throwing money at any problem generally doesn’t fix the problem. In some cases in actually makes things worse. Putting the RIGHT PEOPLE in the right JOB is JOB #1 in my humble opinion. If/when VT decides to get a “top 10” football at the helm we’ll start to see interest, investments, fan support, media attention and broadcasts, etc. skyrocket and we’ll begin to approach the “top 10” on the field, . Until we do THAT, we’re really kinda kidding ourselves IMHO.

  2. Why doesn’t the ACC have closed captions. 1/3 of your listeners probably have hearing problems. More would watch your 2 hosts if they knew what they were talking about.

  3. Chris, thanks for the mention of my Alma Mater …Clinch Valley College. In my day the sports program was known as the CVC Highland Cavaliers. After the school became UVA-Wise the “Highland” was dropped.
