Tyas Martin
Defensive Tackle, Class of 2021
Jacksonville High School, Jacksonville, AR
6-3, 318

Virginia Tech got a big commitment from Jacksonville on Friday afternoon.  No, not the one in Florida, but Jacksonville, Arkansas.  Defensive tackle Tyas Martin verballed to the Hokies after being heavily recruited by new defensive line coaches Bill Teerlinck and Darryl Tapp.

Martin is a 3-star recruit and the No. 27 defensive tackle in the country, according to the 247 Composite ratings.  He is also ranked the No. 3 player in the state of Arkansas by the Composite, and the No. 1 player in Arkansas by Rivals.com.

Martin picked the Hokies over offers from Tennessee, UVA and Kansas.  He is the sixth verbal commitment of Virginia Tech’s 2021 class, which is currently ranked No. 20 in the country.

  1. Very, very good recruiting news! We need to haul in more players in the top-30 at their position, especially the big’uns…

  2. Dumb ? But wonder what put this guy on their radar, being out of Ark I mean. I guess that just shows u how many players the coaches are actually looking at across the country and locking in on the ones they think are gettable. Who was our last player out of Ark!?

  3. TnT’s best sales pitch with Tyas: “…..and best of all, we don’t have feral pigs in Blacksburg”. 😆

  4. Definitely reminds you of Tim Settle. Welcome to Hokie Nation Mr. Martin. You will love it!

  5. If the no. 27-tackle in the country is a 3-star recruit, there must be a big drop off from 5 and 4-star DTs at some ranked number? I say this knowing about the rankings and how 3-star is a wide range

    1. TSL did an article awhile back about there only being 30is 5 Stars and in 200s for 4 stars. So a 3 star can still be very good.

  6. 6’3″ 318 in high school. This guy could be a road grader with a good S&C program.

    1. that is just above average nfl DT size: 6’-3.22” and 308 lbs.

      #AR2VT!

      Go Hokies!

    2. 318 at HS weight. Will probably need to drop 20 to 30# before bulking up with some bone crushing, speed inducing muscle to demolish the opposing QB. Drop 25# and put on 20# of muscle and he’ll be good to go.

      GO HOKIES!!!

  7. TnT ….. Teerlinch and Tapp has a nice ring to it ….. this combo could be a game changer with their pedigrees …..
