Adonis Alexander, Houshun Gaines Reinstated to Virginia Tech Football, Will Miss At Least Liberty Game

Adonis Alexander will likely start at cornerback after his suspension is over.

Virginia Tech football Head Coach Justin Fuente has reinstated cornerback Adonis Alexander and defensive end Houshun Gaines to the team, according to the Roanoke Times’ Andy Bitter.

Alexander and Gaines were cited for marijuana possession in April, and on June 29 were sentenced to 24 hours of community service and one year probation.

Fuente told Bitter that the two will at least be suspended for the Hokies’ season opener against Liberty, but could be available for Virginia Tech’s game vs. Tennessee.

“They’re back with their teammates now. They’ve accomplished all the things I’ve set forward for them,” Fuente said. “If they continue down the right road then they’ll just miss the first one.”

Alexander is expected to start at cornerback for the Hokies opposite Brandon Facyson. As a rover and corner last season, Alexander registered 55 tackles and four interceptions. Gaines, who was fighting for playing time this spring at defensive end, redshirted last season.

  1. Alexander and Gaines, who had been on an indefinite suspension since their citation in April, less than 12 hours after the conclusion of the spring game, were sentenced in Montgomery County District Court to 24 hours of community service and 12 months probation in late June.

  2. I have the good fortune to work with a lot of smart, responsible, and college educated young people. If a couple of them get busted for recreational MJ use this weekend, I sure hope our company would not suspend them.

Good Decision as you say. small potatoes.

  3. I really needed this great news. I hope they can both learn from this and play with a huge chip on their shoulders this season. I want a snot bubble hungry defense this year!

  4. I really like how Fuente has handled it and reported it. Set out expectations for the kids who messed up and allowed them back into the program when the met those expectations. As 134168Hokie said, let’s hope this is a big wake-up call to the two of them AND to the rest of the team!

  5. This was the VT adm. and Football staff to make this call, I think and hope this was their wake-up
call for these two, they will be watched by a lot people for the rest of the season.

    GO HOKIES

  6. Welcome back gentlemen – stay on the path all the way back – its going to great to be a HOKIE!

  7. I agree. I was worried that since they were the first ones they would be punished unfairly.
