Virginia Tech Practice Notes

Virginia Tech opened practice this afternoon in Blacksburg.

A few notes…

  • Shai McKenzie is back with the team, but he is suspended for the Ohio State game.
  • David Prince has given up football to run track.
  • 2015 signee Jahque Alleyne will not join the team until August 13.

Here’s the offensive depth chart…

There are no big surprises there, for the most part.  It’s good to see r-freshman Braxton Pfaff in the two-deep.  True freshman Steven Peoples is also the #2 fullback after an impressive spring.

Here’s what the defense looks like…

Again, there are no big surprises with personnel.  However, notice that there are no longer whips, backers and mikes.  Instead, Tech has a LOLB, a MLB, and a ROLB.  In the past, the whip always lined up on the wide side of the field, while the backer was on the short side.  I’ll have more on that later this weekend once I have a chance to wrap my head around it.

Also, we’ll have video interviews with coaches and players by late tonight/tomorrow morning.  Stay tuned.

    1. I think we tend to see the big target and the athleticism and assume he’s an all-american caliber of player. The problem is there’s a lot more to any position, but especially tight end, than just running to daylight and making the catch. The fact that he practiced at WR suggests he’s got room for a lot of improvement on things expected of a TE.

    1. Also – the Specialists are as follows:

      K – Slye, Hughes
      P – Hughes
      KR – McMillian, Coleman
      PR – Stroman, Reynolds
      KO – Ludwig, Slye
      H – Carroll, Hughes
      PS – D’Antuono, Taylor
      KS – D’Antuono, Taylor

      1. Fisher was the backup whip during the spring and Sheggog only recently switched to ROLB/whip
