Virginia Tech announced late this afternoon that the football program has hired offensive coordinator and QB coach Scot Loeffler, offensive line coach Jeff Grimes, and wide receivers coach Aaron Moorehead.

The trio of new hires replace former quarterbacks coach Mike O’Cain, former offensive line coach Curt Newsome, and former wide receivers coach Kevin Sherman. Sherman is headed to Purdue, and Newsome is going to JMU, per earlier published reports. As of this writing, O’Cain is still searching for employment.

Former offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring will remain on staff and will become recruiting coordinator, in addition to retaining his duties as tight ends coach. Shane Beamer is expected to continue his duties as running backs coach, thus rounding out the five-man offensive staff.

All three hires already have coaching profiles on hokiesports.com, and are also profiled extensively in the press release linked above.

Two important items in addition to the press release and profiles linked above:

  • Loeffler is pronounced LEFF-ler, not LOFF-ler.
  • Jeff Grimes is not related to former VT OL coach J.B. Grimes.

All three hires start officially on Friday, January 25th, and will be introduced at a press conference that day.

  1. I wish Sherman, Newsome, and O’Cain well. Thank you to the three of them for doing a good job while they were at VT. It was just time for a change on the offensive side of the ball at VT. Best of luck to the new coaches. I don’t think it is fair to expect a turnaround next year. I think this is going to take 2 to 3 years to get this going.

  2. All right! These sound like good additions. They appear to be in the same coaching camp that elevated us to the elite- solid running game, tough line play, effective downfield passing fame. Mabe we can now have realistic aspirations for MNC!

  3. Thank you CFB for hearing the cries for change. Thanks for getting that done. Just wish it didn’t have to take a 7-6 season though. Now let’s give it some time and see what becomes of things.

  4. Very encouraging that we finally have a new OC and some new blood! Really like what I hear about Loeffler’s ability to teach QBs. Still a hodgepodge of old & new so it remains to be seen how well it all works together. Will FB really trust Loeffler? Is Billy Hite still the RB/Gameday consultant? Will Stiney be an assistant OC consultant? Hopeful that FB will trust his new OC let him do his thing.

  5. I feel reborn. My god this has taken a long time. Finally, we have new blood to inject some discipline and drive into what has been woeful for the better part of 10 years. I am so excited for something new. I love this Grimes guy. It’s time to kick ass HOKIES!!!! Lets do this!!

  6. I’m optimistic. Fresh young blood, new spirit, infusion of new ideas–no more incestuous, inbreeding VT forever coaches. Looking forward to sping camp and the men being separated from the boys. I hope the players hate these new coaches because the coaches will be hard on and demanding of them,

    1. When compared to the history of VT football coaches that’s true.
But VT has been the exception, not the norm.

  7. If nothing else it seems the VT coaching staff has gotten quite a bit younger in the last couple of years. Hopefully that will help recruiting. I know it’s early in the process be does anyone know how well these new guys recruit?

    1. I have heard that Grimes is a strong recruiter, hopefully he can pull in some stud o-line recruits!! Better yet I hope he can coach them how to open up holes for the running game!!
