Another Week, More Rumors

Here we are in week three of the Virginia Tech coaching search, and we are dealing with even more rumors. Last week we detailed the rumors in this article that discussed Justin Fuente, Rich Rodriguez and Chad Morris. Fuente is still a hot name this week, but another name has joined the discussion: UNC coach Larry Fedora.

FootballScoop.com reported yesterday that Whit Babcock considers Fedora to be a “strong candidate.” I’m not the type to believe everything I see on the internet, but also included in the update was the report that Rich Rodriguez will not be hired by Virginia Tech. I’ve been hearing the exact same thing regarding RichRod, and FootballScoop.com happened to be the first outlet (besides TSL) to say it. So to me, that gives them some credence.

Another reason why I think the Fedora news could be legit is that he checks the boxes we talked about last week: proven winner, offensive minded, and a strong recruiter. Hiring Fedora would make complete sense, if you’re Whit Babcock.

Before we get into more detail about Fedora, as well as talk some more about Justin Fuente, let’s add another box to the checklist: cultural fit. The feedback Whit Babcock has gotten about Rich Rodriguez from the Tech fanbase has surprised him a little bit. At no other school do the fans care about a cultural fit moreso than Virginia Tech. Only on TechSideline.com do you see posts such as “I’d rather lose with Candidate A than win with Candidate B.” Whit probably isn’t used to that kind of sentiment, so it’s made him reevaluate his priorities a bit.
