It’s portal season for Brent Pry and Virginia Tech. (Virginia Tech athletics)

Virginia Tech football is at 82 or 83 scholarships right now, depending on how many specialists are on scholarship. Click here for our roster management page, which contains a little bit more detail.

That means the Hokies currently have two or three spots open. Of course, more players could still enter the transfer portal for a variety of reasons. These days, you never know quite what you’re going to deal with on a week-to-week basis when it comes to poaching. I don’t think that will happen, but we’d be blind to the modern game if we didn’t acknowledge it as a possibility.

Today, we’ll take a position-by-position look at Virginia Tech’s roster and talk about where the Hokies could be looking to add players of their own through the portal this spring and summer. Though most portal work comes in December and January, it’s important to remember that Antwaun Powell-Ryland committed to the Hokies last year on May 4. Not every impact portal guy commits and enrolls in January.

I hesitate to write this article. A few weeks back, I completed or nearly completed two men’s basketball transfer portal articles, only to have further portal entries void nearly everything that I had written. One of those articles had to be scrapped, which wasted a day. The other required heavy editing. Not wanting to get burned again, I’m going to keep this one pretty simple. That shouldn’t be too difficult, because Virginia Tech’s roster is nearly set and only requires small tweaks.
