Satellite Camps Will Be A New Experiment For Virginia Tech

Another thing that happened last week while I was on vacation is that the media got a chance to talk to Justin Fuente and interview him about a variety of topics.  Besides the fact that he got a WWE Championship Belt from former neighbor Jerry “The King” Lawler, the most important thing to come out of that interview was Fuente’s revelation of the location of Tech’s summer satellite camps.

Back in the April 29 Friday Q&A, I was asked to name a few possible locations of satellite camps.  I was correct with my in-state predictions, as the Hokies will hold camps in the 757 and Northern Virginia.  There’s no need to hold one in Richmond, as Richmond recruits don’t have any trouble visiting Blacksburg.  If they really want to attend one of the satellite camps, they can do so in the 757.  It’s a quick drive.

I also said that I didn’t see the Hokies going north to hold a camp.  I thought the Carolinas, Georgia and/or Florida was more likely.  I was partly right.  Tech will hold a camp in Atlanta, but they’ll also head north and try to establish a presence in the state of New Jersey.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of satellite camps.  At some point you have to ask yourself when is it all too much, and I think college football passed that point quite awhile ago. Nevertheless, the Hokies have to do it, particularly with out-of-state programs coming into Virginia and co-hosting camps with Old Dominion.  I believe Tech’s in-state camps will be much more important than their out-of-state camps, in fact.
