Last week we looked at techniques within two defenses that are maybe associated most with the pros: the two-gap 3-4 and the single-gap 4-3. The latter scheme gave us the classic “1-technique” and “3-technique” defensive tackles. In many (if not most) of today’s high-level 4-3 defenses, those tackles are specialized, with the 1-tech being a heavy guy who demands double-teams, and the 3-tech being a quicker penetrator.
