Inside The Numbers: Virginia Tech Men’s Basketball’s Tough Schedule

The Hokies have two regular season games remaining: Tuesday at Louisville and Saturday’s home finale against Notre Dame. I want to point out some things about Tech’s schedule that you may not have realized.

Virginia Tech is 16-13 on the season with an 8-10 record in the ACC. Despite that mediocre record, it ranks No. 52 in the Ken Pomeroy ratings and No. 57 in the NET. If those seem like good ratings for a 16-13 team, it’s because they are.

In Pomeroy’s ratings, only two teams with 16 or fewer wins rank ahead of the Hokies: No. 50 Maryland (15-15) and No. 51 Xavier (15-14). In the NET, it’s just one team: No. 54 Texas A&M (16-13). Ironically, Tech is very similar to the team run by its former head coach, as both the Hokies and the Aggies have played tough schedules.

In terms of non-conference play, Virginia Tech has faced the 94th-toughest schedule in the country, per Ken Pom. Here’s where the ACC teams rank in non-conference strength of schedule:
