Virginia Tech Spring Preview: Quarterbacks

Kyron Drones is back as the Hokies’ starter, a rarity in Blacksburg over the last decade. (Jon Fleming)

With Virginia Tech set to begin spring drills on March 15, we’re counting down the days here at Tech Sideline by previewing all of the Hokies’ position groups. Today, we’ll start with the quarterbacks.

Coming and going

• Departing (1): Grant Wells
• Returning (3): Kyron Drones (r-Jr.), Pop Watson (r-Fr.), Dylan Wittke (r-Fr.)
• Mid-year enrollees: none
• Summer enrollees (1): Davi Belfort (Fr.)

What we know

With Drones in place at the top of the depth chart, Virginia Tech could have a quarterback return and start 10 games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since Logan Thomas was in Blacksburg. Yeah, it’s been a minute.

In 11 games as the starter last year, Drones completed 58.2 percent of his passes last year for 2,085 yards and 17 touchdowns with only three interceptions. He added 818 yards on the ground and five more scores, making him one of the more productive dual-threat quarterbacks in the ACC.
